MINI-INSTITUTE 2016 GUITAR GROUP CLASS
Jacob has training and experience specifically relevant to working with young children. He regularly attends Suzuki workshops and is always refining his teaching. Also he is a parent himself and works as a preschool music specialist in addition to giving guitar instruction.
Jacob Jonker holds a Master’s Degree in Guitar Performance from the University of Minnesota – Minneapolis, where he studied under Jeffrey Van. Prior to that he studied under Joseph Hagedorn at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. While in school Jacob received first prize from the Schubert Club and second prize from the Thursday Musical Scholarship Competitions. He joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 2008.
Jacob has given multiple performances for the Minnesota Guitar Society both as a “Local Artist Series” recitalist and as part of their annual “Guitarathon” concert. He has also performed in concert with the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, UMD Chamber Singers, and other local ensembles. Jacob is also a former Schubert Club and Thursday Musical Prize winner, and has performed as a featured local artist for the Minnesota Guitar Society. He has collaborated with the MGS to bring world-class guitarists to UMD’s Weber Hall.
Jacob has received pedagogy training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas from David Madsen, William Kossler and Andrea Cannon, and is committed to fostering a high standard of character and musicianship in all his students. He is the first guitar instructor to teach for the Lake Superior Suzuki Talent Education Program (LS-STEP). His students have had the opportunity to play in Masterclass with top performers including William Kanengiser and the Brasil Guitar Duo, as well as attending Suzuki Institutes and the International Conference in Minneapolis.
Outside of the academic world, Jacob is an active member of Duluth’s independent music scene, performing with local songwriters and in his own band, “The Formal Age”. He has also composed and performed several original works for both classical and steel-string guitar.
