Upper Graduation Level Revisions

REVISED GUIDELINES WILL BE EFFECTIVE FOR SAM GRADUATION 2017

The Suzuki Association of Minnesota Graduation Committee has been working to clarify the guidelines for Upper Graduation Levels. The listed pieces on the linked documents are taken from standard literature and meant to serve as a guide in preparing students.

The preparation for Levels 9 and 10 should be no different than preparing for any other level. For example, studying appropriate repertoire in between Levels 5 and 6 solidifies and builds necessary skills for actually mastering Level 6, and not just playing the notes. Not every student reaches all levels, nor should they be expected to by either a teacher or parent if the student is not technically or musically ready. It is commonly understood that when students reach Level 8, they need time to mature musically and should be exposed to a variety of musical styles. This kind of natural and essential growth takes time, and therefore not all students reach Level 9 or 10.

GRADUATION IS A CELEBRATION OF ACCOMPLISHMENT

Dr. Suzuki trusted that a teacher would only have a student prepare and submit a recording when they were musically ready. Dr. Suzuki also knew it was in the process of preparing these recordings where the real learning and progress takes place.

For Suzuki students who have reached these levels, the SAM Graduation Committee felt they deserve to be recognized appropriately. Levels 9 and 10 allow these students to have this recognition and experience.

Graduation at any level involves the careful preparation, understanding and joint cooperation on the part of students, parents, and teachers.
